Eugene Railyard - Herbicides

One class of contaminants that has not been tested for is herbicides. Union Pacifc Rail Road applies herbicides regualrly to clear unwanted weed growth from the rail yard and along the tracks. The Railroad Pollution Coalition learned through interviews that the Eugene rail yard has a history of dumping a number of different chemicals when they were no longer useful including 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T, both of which are chlorinated herbicides. If released into groundwater these compounds could move in a manner similar to solvents and create many of the same problems. Despite the potential dangers, they have not been tested for.
