Railyard Contamination - Fuel Spills

Spills of Diesel and other fuels have contaminated ground- water and soil with petroleum hydrocarbons and semi-volatile organic com- pounds. In addition they have left a pool of heavy viscous fuel floating on top of the groundwater table at the yard. While most of this contamination does not move off the yard easily, soil contamination degrades local air quality and puts a question mark over every future construction project at the site. It is also a major source of health concerns for workers employed at the yard.

Due to the spills that occur during refueling, transfer of fuels, and storage of fuels, over twenty Semivolatile Organic Compounds have been identified in the ground water beneath the Eugene rail yard and under adjacent neighborhoods.
