Eugene Railyard Contamination - Chlorinated Solvents

Before the environmental danger of chlorinated solvents was recognized they were released in large quantities into the local environment. They’ve migrated a long ways into River Road groundwater (the reservoirs from which wells pump up water) and a more concentrated plume of contaminants has moved into Trainsong. These pollutants are a long term problem, difficult to remove from groundwater, they degrade indoor air quality, and they are the most mobile form of contamination coming from the yard.

Due to maintenance operations at the yard a variety of volatile organic compounds have been released into the soil and groundwater. There are at least 16 volatile organic compounds found in the risk assessment performed at the Eugene site.
