Toys and Toxics

Something Every Parent Should Know

Many children's products and toys contain chemicals that are known to cause cancer, genetic damage, asthma, birth defects and learning disabilities.

Why Children are at Risk

Children are more vulnerable to toxics than adults, because their bodies and minds are still developing.

Three Toxics to Look Out for

Many common children's products contain dangerous levels of lead, phthalates, and bisphenol-A.

  1. Lead is a known carcinogen, and can cause damage to the nervous system and brain. It's often found in products containing PVC. They can be found by the number "3" inside or the letter "V" underneath the universal recycling symbol. Lead is often found in pigments used on toys - especially deep reds, pinks, greens, and black.
  2. Phthalates - A colorless chemical used in thousands of consumer products to add flexibility and durability. It is a suspected carcinogen, can damage the reproductive system, and has been linked to cancer. Phthalates are frequently found in products containing PVC.
  3. Bisphenol-A (BPA) - It has been suspected of being hazardous to humans since the 1930s. It has been linked to cancer and can alter brain development. BPA is often found in products containing polycarbonate which is marked with a "7" or "PC". It is used on the coating of the inside of almost all food and beverage cans.

Didn't the New Federal Law Deal With it?

Not necessarily. The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act supposedly banned products with dangerous levels of lead and phthalates after Feb 10, 2009. However, the Consumer Product Safety Commission decided that products manufactured before that date can still be sold. Many other dangerous chemicals are not addressed at all.

What's Happening in Oregon?

Environmental and health groups are supporting the Children's Safe Products Act of 2009 (HB 2367). It will:

  • Ban the use of dangerous chemicals in children's products, including phthalates and bisphenol-A.
  • Substitute safe chemicals for the harmful ones that are banned.
  • Require stores to get recalled toys off of their shelves immediately.
